I thought I'd post a quick update to the page as I've not had much time to post anything for a while. I managed a gentle evening stroll along Curbar Edge last night. I had hoped to photograph some fabulous sunset shots, but alas the setting sun failed to deliver.
I had felt a little under the weather on Saturday so thought it best to abandon my plan of a days hiking and wild camping in favour of a well earned rest. Feeling better on Sunday left me feeling like I needed some adventure, but already I had a list of chores so at best I reckoned I could squeeze in a short evening trip. I had something in mind and decided to leave home at around 7pm in the direction of Derbyshire's gritstone edges with camera in hand. As I drove through Matlock Bath the smell of fish and chips in the air caught my attention. There was a lovely seaside feel to place with its hustle and bustle. I continued north and arrived at about 8pm, parked up in a layby along Clodhall lane just below Curbar gap then made my way up the front of this fine gritstone edge to the top, a little scrambling needed in places, but well within my capabilities. I then walked a little way along to try and find a decent spot to start taking a few snaps and looking back towards Baslow Edge I saw my first opportunity! (my camera work doesn't do it justice)

Not being tied to time I had only the setting sun to contend with and she was main reason I was here after all so I just carried on at a gentle pace and it wasn't long before I came across a Peak District landmark! one of the old Millstones, used for milling flour in the area and cut from the gritstone all along these edges in days gone by and some have just been left where they were cut. It used to be a thriving industry.
After about ten minutes or so I decided to sit awhile and soak up some of the last few rays of warmth as they begin to hide behind the clouds and it soon becomes apparent that I'm not going to be treated to a glorious sunset this evening. The gentle breeze was somewhat cooler now and I had to reach for my windshirt. I manage a couple more pictures then made my way a little further along and plan to take a few shots of the edge with the sun casting its eerie glow. |
it wasn't long before the Sun became an ember in the sky and I decided that as I wasn't going to get the picture I really wanted so I would head back to the car taking in the dusk view on my return.
This little stroll hadn't quite turned out as I had planned, but I had managed to stretch my legs and get some fresh air, clear out some cobwebs so to speak. It was almost dark as I arrived back at the car and as always I was the last to leave. Now I'm thinking about those fish 'n' chips!
The next instalment coming soon.
Thanks for reading.
